In case you have filed the return online in India and in case you made a mistake in typing the TAN number which came up in the intimation under section 143(1) then the following procedure has to be followed:
- Login with the UserID and passwd at the Income tax webpage
- On the right box you can click on the "Rectification Request"
- Fill the Assessment Year as in 143(1)
- Fill the Communication Reference Number number in 143(1) along with the date from the 143(1). Please note any error in typing can cause rectification request to be rejected.
- For Rectification Request Type select: "TAN Wrongly Quoted"
- Select "Taxpayer is correcting data for tax credit mismatch only"
- Please type the corrected TAN number and all the details like income etc.
- File the request. Please note in case of TAN error no need to refile the xml again.
- It gets corrected in a months time and you can track the status in this same page.
